Task A1 - Editing techniques

Editing techniques

180 Degree rule:

In this clip, it denotes two people having a conversation which connotes the conversation is much more believable due to the use of the rule of thirds being used successfully. This is because as the camera flips between characters, they don’t change what side of the screen they are on. Glenn is always on the right side and Grace is always on the left. This makes the targeted audience feel as if this isn’t just a tv programme but it is much more realistic to them, which helps them to feel as if they’re actually there. It makes sure that the audience stays orientated and they become disorientated. The 180 degree rule is useful in drama series because it helps to get a real perspective of the characters reactions and personality at that time. In Hollyoaks, it helps the audience to be able to see both Glenn and Grace's emotion towards the situation which makes the atmosphere much more tense. Essentially, this rule is not specific to any format or genre as all good filmmakers/directors should be using this technique as it stops the audience from getting confused.

Rule of thirds:
Again the rule of thirds is a technique that should be seen in all genres, even animation like The Incredibles. In this clip in Jurassic world, the rule of thirds is used and this denotes Owen trying his best to train the reptiles and ensure that they don’t attack him, or the new employee. This makes the targeted audience feel like the shot is aesthetically pleasing and when the objects are on the four meeting points the audience's eyes are drawn to the vocal point, which balances the shot even more. Jurassic Park come under a lot of genres such as action, science fiction, adventure and thriller. The rule of thirds helps to ensure the audience are able to see all of the action in one scene by catching all the dinosaurs and Owen which highlights the thriller and science fiction in the movie.

Eye-line match:
In this scene, the director uses eye-line match which denotes Harry Potter speaking to the Griphook. In the scene you are able to tell who the character is speaking to at all times as we are shown after each character speaks. This makes the targeted audience feel as if it bring realism to the movie and the audience gets a much better understanding of the film, and relationships between the characters as how they are looking at each other will inform the audience more about their emotions at tat moment.. Harry Potter's main genre is fantasy fiction and the use of the eye line match method in this genre makes the movie much more realistic even though it is a fictional movie. This technique is again used in all films regardless of the genre and its conventions.

Match on action:
At the beginning of this scene, it denotes Elastigirl walking through the door into the principal's office. As she opens it and the camera flips, the door is exactly in the same position as it was before the camera flips. This connotes realism because the door was exactly in the same place and angle as it was before the camera flipped. This makes the targeted audience feel like it’s believable and it also gives the audience the illusion of there being no cuts. In Incredibles, match on action allows there to be no confusion in the animation and this is especially due to the wide range of children that will be watching the film. Therefore, they need to make sure that the flow of movie is as realistic as possible so that there is no confusion. Shot reverse shot:
It denotes that a young women has lost her son and is panicking to find her. Then a workmate see’s her and finds him instantly. The use of shot reverse shot is to encapsulate the seriousness of the scene. It makes the atmosphere feel much more tense for the audience and it also makes them feel a lot of suspense.

Cross cutting:
In this scene from The Godfather, it denotes someone's child being christened and also some drama happening somewhere else. This is successfully used through parallel editing which makes the targeted audience feel suspense and it creates tension in the clip. It shows a relationship between the scenes which could suggest that the actions are happening at the same time.

Cutaway:
In this scene, it denotes a group of people having fun whilst two other characters are talking about them. It portrays their reactions towards the man getting pied in the face and shows that they find it quite amusing. This technique makes the targeted audience feel as if the realism in the movie because their reactions seem very natural and not scripted.

Reaction shots:
In this scene, it denotes Mia having a full makeover and her assistant watching. The scene shows the assistant reacting to how hard Mia’s hair was to comb and the reaction she gives is quite amusing towards the audience. This could be the purpose of the shot, to humour the audience. This makes the targeted audience feel as if these are realistic reactions and hides that this is a movie as the director wants the audience to feel apart of the movie. The use of reaction shots in the comedy The Princess Diary is useful because it helps the audience to understand her reaction through the whole life changing situation from being a normal teenage girl to being a Princess of a whole country. Watch from 1:20 to 1:43
Jump shots:
In this scene, it denotes jerky clips of three characters moving around are room. This connotes that the characters could be very bored and have nothing to do. This is highlighted at the beginning as the first thing we see is a man sleeping. This makes the targeted audience really feel as if they understand how the characters feel, even though they are not actually experiencing it.
