Task A1 - Camera language

Camera language

Shot types:

The director uses extreme long shots to denote Johnny Depp running from a group of men on horses. This could connote how much danger he is in. However, he does have a cheeky smile on his face even though he is in a serious situation. The location makes it seem as if he is in a far place that doesn’t have many people to help him. This may make the audience get a better picture of his personality.
These shots are used because it shows the audience everything. The image denotes the joker standing in a hospital room with a gun. It connotes danger and seriousness through the characters body language. The fact that it is in a hospital room suggests that he may want to make sure someone is dead, and he will not stop until they are.
Medium long shots are used to show Johnny Depp's whole body and his body language. This connotes his strength and dominance, stereotypically have a male character play this role is right because they are superior to women and are meant to be the protector. However, women can too and a lot of new movies are having women as their main actors. The beach location suggests that he could be fighting alone especially because no one else is in the picture which emphasises his power. Also the way he tried to take out his sword is very fierce.
The medium shot is a general, all-purpose shot. Medium shots are used to pick up on the character's movements and gestures. Body language is important to conveying emotion, and the medium shot remains close enough to capture that emotion. In the image, the dominance the two characters are trying to portray. Their body language is very strong and fierce.

The purpose of using a medium close-up shot is because the director of Twilight wanted to denote Kristen Stewart staring at the camera. This connotes her focus and seriousness. In a lot of medium close-ups, from the chest down the audience can’t see. This is a way to hide things such as weapons. This shot is taken at eye level which makes the audience connect with Kristan Stewart.
The purpose of using a close-up in this movie is so that the audience is able to see the joker’s full facial expression. The image denotes the joker with a cheeky smile looking at someone but he is not directly looking at us, however the camera is at eye level. This may be because the director wanted didn’t want anyone feeling inferior to one another. The location that the joker is in denotes a man behind him in a black bodysuit. This connotes that whoever is behind him is much more superior to him and the joker still doesn’t look worried. He still has a cheeky smile on his face, even though the audience knows he is not in a good position.
The director has chosen to use a big close-up at eye level. The fact that he is at eye level with us makes the audience feel like we’re equal with Liam Neeson. The big close-up denotes Neeson staring straight into the camera which connotes his anger and frustration. All the scars on his face suggests that he could of got into a very serious fight or accident, and the fact that he is still fighting shows his great strength. There is a lot of blood which could connote danger, anger and fear.
Through the use of an extreme close-up at eye level, the image denotes Charles Xavier’s staring at something that us the audience can’t see. This connotes that he is focused and is a serious because he has a small scar on his forehead but still hasn’t died or given up. His facial expression also displays his determination to finish whatever he has started. The fact the he is at eye level with the camera makes the audience feel as if he is not hurt them and they they’re equal, and it’s safe.
Shot types:
The purpose of a low angle shot is to denote superiorness and dominance. You are being able to witness what the person see as if you were them on the ground. The image denotes officers staring at someone. The location suggests that it’s in a deserted and old area as if they were going to leave the character. This shot is a convention of the director Quentin Tarantino, who has used a low angle in nearly all his films to show the dominance one character may have over another.

Directors choose to use eye level shots because they want the audience to feel comfortable and to feel as if they are being spoken to directly. This makes the audience feel much more of a personal connection and the ability to relate more and feel sympathetic. The location is very scary and bookie and connotes mystery and horror.
This angle shot makes the person who is looking at the camera inferior because the camera is above them. The image denotes a little girl look at someone who has much more power than her. The location looks like she is in a house, therefore you could say it’s her family talking to her and she’s scared of them.
This kind of shot can seem disorienting because it is rarely the way audiences themselves see the world. Because of this, directors often use the bird’s-eye view when they want to make some kind of dramatic comment on a character or scene. For example, in titanic when Rose is going to jump in the water the director used birds eye view shot to emphasise the extremities. The effect of this shot is to suggest the madness of boat crash and the live that are at risk.
Canted angles are used because they want the audience to feel as if they are in the guys mind. It denotes a man walking through a psych word which may connote the crazy mind he has. The location is in a psych ward which may connote that he is psycho and to help the audience feel how he feels. Canted angles also connote a sense of danger or that something isn't quite right with the world, such as Harry Potter snd his friends trying to battle evil forces.
