TV Series & Serials
Depending on how busy your day to day lifestyle, affects what people watch. Some people may watch series and others may watch serials. They are beneficial in so many different ways, but can means the viewers must be invested in their own way.
Serials are episodes when the narrative picks up from where the last episode left off. An example of serials are EastEnders and Hollyoaks. Serials are constantly on every day or every week which makes the audience become very invested in the serial. Many people watch serials because it entertains them and helps to fill in spare time they have. The audience may also watch serials for social interaction as it helps to find a basis for conversation and social interaction. The long and continuous story lines allow the audience to create a relationship with individual characters. As it's a continuous story line, many new people watching the serial would be confused. Also missing episodes in serials makes the audience much less invested in the serial as each episode is connected. EastEnders is a very popular tv serial that was first aired on 19th February 1985 with an average of 8 million viewers each night since. Many of their audience are invested in EastEnders because of their long and continuous story line which allows the audience to become emotionally invested with each character on a personal level. EastEnders is very engaging to their audience and they cater for every age group, as each age group in the serial has their own interesting story line. Danni Bennatar who plays 'Louise Mitchell' currently has her own love story line in the serial with Danny Walters 'Keanu Taylor'. This story may interest the audience that's in their mid teens as they could relate with her story, but they could also just find her story very entertaining. Moreover, another age group you have is with June Brown who plays 'Dot Branning'. This appeals to the audience that is much older and has seen June Brown grow since her first episode on EastEnders as she is one of longest actors that has played in EastEnders. At the moment, she is in a story line with one of the newer characters and she really shows off her powers in a couple of scenes. This makes the audience love Dot as she is such a role model to many of viewers and she is cared for very much. Serials don't follow Tzvetan Todorovs theory which follows five different stages, they follow a much more non-linear narrative because of it's continuous story line. This allows disruptions in the episodes to shock the audience unexpectedly which puts the audience in a very tense atmosphere.

Series may come on each week which does also allow the audience to become invested in the series, however because the story is different each week the audience won't have to be 100% invested as they can use it for quick enjoyment. This makes the audience feel as if they don't have to commit to the series as much as they do with serials which allows them get quick enjoyments from these episodes. Series may be watched by the audience to entertain them and to help them to relax whilst filling in some spare time. Death in paradise is a detective tv series which was first aired on the 25th October 2011 with around 8 million viewers watching their episodes each week. The audience are very invested in this series because it's a quick entertainment show which you don't have to see every episode to understand any current episodes. Viewers are able to jump in and out of seasons and episodes, as each episode has a different story line/crime to solve. This makes the audience feel as if they don't have be invested in the series as much as they know they won't get confused compared to serials. Series follow Tzvetan Todorovs theory because of it's beginning-middle-end structure for each episode which allows the linear narrative to follow Todorovs stages in each episode. This puts the audience in a tense atmosphere, however this tense feeling is revealed at the end of the each episode compared to serials.
